Giuseppe "Pino" Puglisi (15 September 1937 – 15 September 1993) was a Roman Catholic priest in the rough Palermo neighbourhood of Brancaccio. He openly challenged the Mafia who controlled the neighbourhood, and was killed by them on his 56th birthday. His life story has been retold in a books, movies and graffiti aroud the city. He is the first Mafia victim who was declared Blessed by the Catholic Church. This video was made by Andrea Saccone and Dalila Lo Verso.
Frutta martorana (also frutta di Martorana or, in Sicilian, frutta marturana) are traditional marzipan sweets, in the form of fruits and vegetables, from the provinces of Palermo and Messina Sicily. Realistically coloured with vegetable dyes, they are said to have originated at the Monastero della Martorana, Palermo, when nuns decorated empty fruit trees with marzipan fruit to impress an archbishop visiting at Easter. Descendant of a Sicilian noble family, she married the entrepreneur Ignazio Florio Jr., member of the wealthy Florio family.
